Join us for the first segement of what will be a two-part event with the Genki Ala Wai Project!

At our first session, we will be constructing “Genki Balls” at the headquarters of JPG Hawai‘i. Genki Balls are created with organic materials and harness the technology of bioremediation in an attempt to clean the Ala Wai Canal.

We will be hosting the second segment of this community service project in a couple weeks’ time, when we will toss our Genki Balls into the Ala Wai and let them get to work.

Registration for this event is $20 and includes food, beverage, and Genki Ball materials.

What exactly are Genki Balls?
Genki Balls are tennis ball-sized mud balls that contain a mixture of clay soil, rice bran, molasses, water, and EM•1 solution. What is EM•1? They are “Effective Microorganisms” a mixed culture of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms found in the natural environment (primarily lactic acid bacteria, yeast, and phototrophic bacteria).

For the project, Genki balls are tossed into the Ala Wai canal to digest sludge. To digest sludge, EM must reach the bottom of the canal. According to the USDA, one teaspoon of healthy soil contains one hundred million to one billion bacteria. After the Genki balls embed into the surface of the sludge, the fermentative bacteria begin to digest and oxygenate the sludge. At the same time, the phototrophic bacteria consume harmful gases, and contain foul odors.
